The Set: Rough Rider & his Cowgirl

This set is a dive into American history. The Rough Rider has been through it all. War, Teddy Roosevelt, drug scandals, murders, tattoo legends, and eventually became an iconic New York tattoo even though it’s a cowboy. This single image represents so much.

But honestly, after I finished creating The Rough Rider, he looked a little lonely. Every cowboy needs his Cowgirl, so I made one for him. But she’s not just a cute cowgirl. Like The Rough Rider she has an equally important history. She is a tribute to the women like Annie Oakley and Lucille Mulhall. Women who created the cowgirl image, and cemented the idea of what it means to truly be a cowgirl, at a time when they were expected to be lady like, wear corsets, and ride side saddle.

The Style

After a long day tattooing, trying to make every line perfect, and striving for perfection, my regular style can start to feel a bit constricted for me. I decided to lean into this playful approach for a while to just let my hand move.

This style is a total departure for me. Because of my history with ballet, painting like this feels like a return to that movement in a way. It’s not about clean lines; it’s about the rhythm and the physical energy on the paper. I’ve wanted to experiment with this for a long time, and I love how it breathes new life into these old-school designs.
